A consortium of freight railway companies led by Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced the successful completion of their Digital Automatic Coupling (DAC) project’s testing phase and is ready to begin mass production.

This technology is seen as the key to expanding the capacity of Europe’s freight transport system, as there are currently 500,000 manually coupled freight wagons in the European Union. Updating this process will be significantly more efficient and enable further steps to be taken.

Furthermore, DB stated that this technology will allow freight trains to achieve significantly higher speeds. Part of the reason for this is that the brakes can be electronically controlled, similar to passenger trains. Additionally, reducing fuel consumption is an environmentally friendly solution that aligns with addressing climate change.
